Thailand is one of the world’s largest growers of sugarcane, but Thai rum’s been a relative rarity in the U.S. until now. Shakara Rum, which made its American debut last year, draws its name from the Sanskrit word shakar, honoring sugarcane’s long history in Southeast Asia. This molasses-based rum is produced and matured in the central province of Nakhon Pathom.

On January 26, veteran writer, photographer, and regular Imbibe contributor Pableaux Johnson collapsed while photographing the Ladies and Men of Unity second-line parade in New Orleans, and later died at a hospital. He was 59 years old. “Writer and photographer” barely scratches the surface of what Pableaux Johnson was, or what he meant to his home city of New Orleans or the vast diaspora of friends and acquaintances he collected over the years.

Dec. 30, 1922: The "pastor-sheriff" of Polk County, Iowa, Winfred Robb, is arrested for bootlegging after whiskey and stills are found at his home. He says he was holding the items as evidence, and was framed for being a "he-man" trying to do "God's work in enforcing the law." https://t.co/Ib90mBw3ix
