This stirring audiobook makes a strong argument for narrator consistency. Once again Henry Leyva narrates the adventures of Doiron's Mike Bowditch. So it's little wonder that Leyva sounds so comfortable when voicing Mike and his close circle of friends and relatives. This outing is especially trying for the veteran Maine game warden as he attempts to track down a ruthless but wily fugitive in the woods along the Maine-Quebec border.

Game Warden Mike Bowditch is back, keeping Maine safe. When two boaters are killed, he suspects more than an accident, and he begins to probe the island residents and others tied to the victims. Narrator Henry Leyva avoids stereotypical accents except for one or two characters whose laconic Maine speech is strong and enjoyable to hear. He believably delivers the emotions of each character, including the frustration, annoyance, or anger Bowditch occasionally elicits.

Review by Kristina A, Reviewer Last updated on 08 Jun 2023 Dead Man’s Wake by Paul Doiron is not what I expected. I did not realize it was the fourteenth book in the Mike Bowditch Mysteries. I wish it had been mentioned in the blurb. I found myself confused in the beginning. It takes time to get the characters straight (and there are so many of them). Dead Man’s Wake is a police procedural that focuses on game wardens in Maine (which seem to operate like police).
