Australia has started 2025 without a Chief Scientist and without a chair or deputy chair for its primary industry, innovation and science advisory board. Former Australian chief scientist Dr Cathy Foley’s four years in the role concluded on December 31, when she completed a one-year extension to her original three-year contract. A replacement for Dr Foley has not yet been named.

Today I announce that I will not run for re-election at the forthcoming federal election. It has been a considerable privilege to represent the people of Bradfield, and to serve as, successively, a Parliamentary Secretary, Minister and Cabinet Minister between August 2013 and May 2022, and as a senior Opposition frontbencher since May 2022.
