The last time I tried to kill myself I was twenty-five years old. I stood on a ledge nine floors from the ground, staring into the abyss that was my life. It called to me as it always did, taunting me with memories of all the things I should have, could have or would have done better. Powerless to do much else, I stood there, taking it all in, letting shame and regret weigh me down. Maybe if I stood there long enough the weight would be weighty enoughtto send me over the edge.

Mine was never a home of books. They did not exist. It was Shi Huangdi’s China. It was a house of music. Brother’s father a guitarist, a bass player, and a pianist. I was in awe. Music still escapes me, that big library of the soul.

He hoisted the man high in his coiled trunk, then dashed him to the ground. The elephant then turned and lumbered through the dense thicket bordering the farm, the sound of trampled vegetation fading as the dazed farmer slowly stood up. Hassan brushed the red dust off his body and clothes and picked up his short-handle hoe.
