In December, the British Medical Journal ran an article by Richard Hurley that explained how “hospital radio is evolving from offering companionship on the wards to bringing health and wellbeing broadcasting to the community.” At Torbay Hospital Radio, our prime objective is to reach the patients in the hospital and keep them entertained with relevant shows. With this in mind, it was reassuring to read the article.

What’s New for the New Year? So, as we enter 2025, I was wondering what new music we have in store from established stars and new artists that we may not have heard of. The year just gone was undoubtedly the year of Taylor Swift. The USA Billboard crowned her the artist of the year, and what with her spectacular “Eras” tour, it’s difficult to think anything will be different this year.

Watch out, here it comes again. What, I hear you say, well Christmas of course. We all love it, don’t we? Well, no, some do not, and I have to say since I was a kid, the festive season seems to have gotten longer and longer. I am sure I am not imagining it; what happens is driven by money, of course, with retailers looking to maximise their return from the most lucrative time of the year. I mean, who can blame them? It has been a tough time for the shops over the last couple of years.

4 1/1 THE River Severn is like many rivers across the world that have changed their course and use over thousands of years. Today they are usually in the news for negative reasons, including flooding or pollution levels. In Worcester’s past, long before roads and land vehicles, the river was an important artery. Waterways did not divide people but united them as one. When the Romans arrived in around 50AD, they chose an area we now call Diglis as a harbour.

It was so saddening to hear of the death of One Direction’s Liam Payne. A likeable young man who had spent his whole life in the public eye. I feel so much for his family, who were helpless to lend a hand, being half a world away. The circumstances surrounding his death will obviously cause much debate and rumours are bound to flying around. Unfortunately, untimely deaths in the music industry are nothing new, Liam is not the first and will not be the last.

If Emily Eavis phoned and said you could organise the Glastonbury festival and you could have any artist or band there, living or dead, still playing or not who would you have? She’s given you the final slot on the Pyramid stage on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, plus the Sunday afternoon legends slot. Easy job? I don’t think so, you have no restrictions which makes the job even harder as there are so many to choose from or is it too many to choose from?

I think we would all agree that our health is important and as a Hospital Radio we are sending out messages regularly to people in the wards at Torbay, Newton Abbot and Brixham hospitals. Also important is that down time, when you take a moment for yourself or take a well earned holiday. For me, the two have bashed together in the last week and here’s a spoiler alert, most of this applies to the more mature reader.

4 1/1 WORCESTER people saw the horrors of war first-hand 373 years ago. The population numbered around 7,000 people when 12,000 Royalists and 30,000 Parliamentarians fought the last battle of the English Civil Wars on September 3, 1651. The city was stormed by Cromwell’s far superior force in the late afternoon. It was violent and unforgiving. By dawn the next day Worcester was a smouldering wreck with its streets littered with the dead and wounded.

This week my computer has been driving me crazy, apparently my password was wrong. So I thought changing my password might help, but it wasn’t strong enough, It didn’t have a special character, so I tried one, only to be told it was not allowed. Then helpfully I was asked if I wanted to use biometrics? Unfortunately, I could not get the picture of my head in the little box appearing on the screen, then the lighting was not bright enough. My frustration levels were high.
