The Commission of the European Union has slapped Apple and Meta with fines of €500 million and €200 million, respectively, for breaching the rules of the Digital Markets Act. Specifically, it found Apple guilty of breaching the anti-steering obligation under the DMA and Meta failing to offer users a service option that uses less of their personal data. In Apple’s case, the Commission found that app developers can’t fully benefit from alternative app stores, due to Apple’s restrictions.

Ofcom, the UK’s digital regulator, has announced that it’s banning Global Titles leasing from today to better protect people. Ofcom described Global Titles as special phone numbers that can be leased for legitimate purposes but can also be leased by malicious actors to divert calls and messages, including security codes sent by banks. In extreme cases, malicious actors can track your location, according to Ofcom.

Fujitsu and RIKEN (a leading Japanese research institute) have announced that they’ve developed a new 256-qubit superconducting quantum computer, which significantly expands their quantum computing capabilities. Fujitsu said that the computer is at the RIKEN RQC-FUJITSU Collaboration Center and implements high-density implementation techniques. This new machine builds on a previous quantum computer that the pair developed, which had 64 qubits.
