At 5 feet, 1 inch and 105 pounds, Campbell sophomore Shaleah “Lala” Moore doesn’t look like the typical sack monster. Moore became the most imposing playmaker in the state as Hawaii enjoyed its inaugural season of high school flag football. Moore racked up 20 sacks as Campbell’s primary pass rusher to earn Star-Advertiser All-State Defensive Player of the Year honors. “I’m actually surprised. I never thought I would get something like this. I just tried my best,” Moore said.

The Andrew Manley era has come to a close at Moanalua. The former state-championship quarterback at Leilehua and longtime prep assistant coach stepped down after two seasons as Moanalua’s head coach. “It’s been a blessing to have the opportunity to coach at Moanalua,” Manley said via text on Monday night. “I’ve been part of the journey for so many players, but it’s my son’s turn now. He’s preparing for high school ball. He has opportunities on the mainland and I need to be there for him.

The first glimpse of potential greatness was on the pitch. Ellana (pronounced El-LAY-na) and a group of 5-year-olds were hand-picked to play on an all-star soccer team. The group included Jax Realin, who would go on to be a three-time state wrestling champion at Kamehameha. Eventually, she gravitated to basketball. At 12, a foot injury sidelined Klemp. These days, Sage Miller isn’t up at 5 a.m. on Saturdays, begging her sleeping parents for a family bicycle ride. She is, however, up before sunrise on her own in a never-ending quest for pool perfection. In May, Miller capped an illustrious career at ‘Iolani with gold medals in the 200-yard IM (2:02.81) and the 100 butterfly (54.13), plus more gold in the 200 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay. Miller’s career total: eight gold, four silver and one bronze. “I took a little break after states.

When he was old enough to walk, Charles-Titan Lacaden was at his grandfather’s farm from sun-up to sun-down. It never felt like work for toddler Titan. “I remember Papa walking around, seeing him take care of all the animals. I don’t know how he was able to do it. Let the animals out, let them roam, get them together peacefully. Tell them to go to this pen, go to this cage,” Lacaden recalled. “The chickens would run away and he would call his dogs to bring them back.
