Palehua Silva drove in five runs, including four on a grand slam, as No. 4 Maryknoll overpowered No. 9 Kamehameha 11-1 in six innings on Saturday at Sand Island State Recreation Area. Maryknoll will play the Punahou-‘Iolani winner on Thursday in a battle of unbeatens in the ILH round-two double-elimination softball tournament. Kamehameha (12-12 overall), which beat Mid-Pacific on Monday, will face the Punahou-‘Iolani loser on Tuesday in an elimination game.

In a sea of blue Buffanblu and brown-and-gold Trojans, Hurricanes appeared at the footsteps of Diamond Head. Kapolei seniors Katlin Kiko and Leila Paraoan are taking the leap to college volleyball. Kiko will suit up for Alaska-Anchorage while Paraoan heads to Tarleton State (Stephenville, Texas), a recent addition to the Western Athletic Conference. The two pals were among 38 signees early Wednesday morning at the Education-1st National Letter of Intent signing event at Honolulu Elks Lodge 616.

Hayden Kaahanui-Cera passed for 253 yards and two touchdowns as Kamehameha stifled Punahou, 19-0, for the inaugural ILH flag football championship Wednesday afternoon at Alexander Field. The sophomore quarterback completed 22 of 32 pass attempts with one interception. The Warriors were 5-1 in the regular season and needed a win over Punahou, which edged ‘Iolani, 21-13, on Tuesday, to win the league title. Despite the loss, Punahou (5-2 ILH) earns the league’s second state-tournament berth.

The refurbished, improved course at the Pearl at Kalauao could have spooked veteran golfers away. Spacious and emerald green, the hills and added bunkers make the course daunting and, for many, haunting. Kate Nakaoka relished the challenge. Through the offseason, Nakaoka and her friends made it a point to play a course that may be the most hilly in the state. With a healthy dose of tradewinds, most of the field struggled on Monday and Tuesday.
