Welcome to the first full weekend in June Minnesota. These summer weekends are precious this far north. Many of us live in a state of partial hibernations for a few months each winter. Then it seems like a race to pack in all those great summer activities and celebrations in just a few weeks between now and September. I’d give this upcoming weekend’s weather forecast 6 or 7 Weather Lab stars depending on how much wildfire smoke filters down from Canada Sunday. The good news?

May you live in interesting times. Tuesday’s smoke front produced the highest air quality index reading for wildfire smoke on record in the state of Minnesota. I checked with meteorologists at the MPCA and they told me Tuesday that the AQI in Grand Portage at the northeast tip of Minnesota hit 800 at 2 a.m. Tuesday. That breaks the previous smoke induced AQI record of 692 in St. Cloud on July 29, 2021. Worst MN wildfire smoke air quality index today since records began in 2000.

Our latest Canadian wildfire front produced choking smoke levels across much of Minnesota Tuesday morning. Air quality readings for fine particulate matter from smoke (PM 2.5) in the Twin Cities peaked around 272 micrograms per cubic meter of air Tuesday morning. Here’s the data for the east Phillips area Tuesday. Tuesday's Air Quality Index was comparable to the record set in July 2021. We’ll have to see where we land pending final data from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.
