An official proposal to expand the men’s 2030 World Cup to 64 teams has been put forward by South American governing body CONMEBOL. The tournament will be hosted by Spain, Morocco and Portugal, after the opening matches are held in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay. The 2026 World Cup will be the first with 48 teams, but Conmebol wants to expand further for 2030 to mark the competition’s 100th anniversary.

Benni McCarthy has said Kenya can “surprise a lot of people” by qualifying for the 2026 World Cup after being appointed as the country’s new head coach. The South African has signed a two-year deal that will see him lead the Harambee Stars up to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, a tournament which will be held on home soil in East Africa, with Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda co-hosting.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has criticised the balls used in England’s domestic cup competitions. The criticism came after Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta’s who was ridiculed earlier in the season when he expressed his anger over the ball being used in the Carabao Cup after a defeat against Newcastle in the semi-final. Manchester city won 3-1 in the FA Cup against Championship side Plymouth on Saturday, but had 20 shots off target in the match.

The police in Uganda are investigating the death of a Nigerian professional footballer who allegedly fell from a shopping mall in the capital, Kampala. Abubakar Lawal, 29, reportedly fell from a third-floor balcony at the Voicemall Shopping Arcade, where he had gone to visit a Tanzanian friend. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead, the police said.

Fiorentina striker Moise Kean collapsed on the pitch and was taken to hospital after sustaining a head injury during Sunday’s 1-0 defeat at Hellas Verona. The former Everton, Paris St. Germain and Juventus forward, face collided with Pawel Dawidowicz’s knee as he fell while battling for the ball in the 58th minute. Kean, 24, carried on playing following treatment before losing his balance and falling to the floor in the 64th minute.

According to the Vatican, he is currently in a “stable” condition. On Monday, the Vatican stated that doctors have adjusted the treatment for Pope Francis’ respiratory tract infection to address a “complex clinical situation,” and he will remain hospitalized as long as necessary.

Italian giants Napoli have rejected a €65m bid from Galatasaray for Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen. According to Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport, the Turkish giants attempted to make Osimhen’s loan move permanent but fell short of the striker’s €75m release clause. The 26-year-old joined Galatasaray on loan until the end of the season without an option to buy, but the Turkish club have a unique advantage in negotiations due to a compensation clause in the agreement.

West Ham sacked its manager Julen Lopetegui on Wednesday after just 22 games in- charge, with former Chelsea boss, Graham Potter expected to replace him at the London Stadium. The Hammers are 14th in the Premier League table, seven points above the relegation zone, after just six wins in 20 league matches during the Spaniard’s tenure. A 4-1 hammering at champions Manchester City on Saturday was the final straw for club chiefs.
