DiscussionOur analysis of scaling hypertension care in 24 countries—across a range of income levels and regions—estimated that compared with continuation of the status quo improving the hypertension care cascade using an SBP≥140 mm Hg cut-point would save nearly 1.2 million lives over the study’s 30-year time horizon. It also identified that around 68% of those health benefits are derived from treating those at the highest risk (SBP≥160 mm Hg).

Delgado-Ron et al. report an analysis of US NHANES datasets exploring the association between mean daily sodium intake and prevalent hypertension among a small sub-set (<10%) of adults on a caloric deficit diet [1]. They find no association between estimated sodium consumption and odds of hypertension. They conclude by suggesting the need to explore new population strategies for the reduction of sodium intake.
