No doubt about it, Canada is at war and lives and livelihoods are in great danger. Most people know the Great Depression started in 1929 with the stock market crash. However, many will not know why the world economy collapsed for 10 lost years. In 1930 US President Herbert Hoover passed the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act raising already very high tariffs another 20 per cent to 40 pe rcent on incoming goods. The Act was signed into law by president Hoover on June 17, 1930.

Doug Ford’s entire campaign was based on a promise he would save us from Trump. Who will save us from Ford? When US President Ronald Reagan and UK prime minister Margaret Thatcher brought in their policies of tax cuts, deregulation and privatization, they promised prosperity for all. The theory being that wealth would eventually trickle down to all. Completely discredited, trickle-down economics failed dismally and never delivered prosperity as promised.

February 17 is the leaders debate at the CBC. It will be consequential because of the many problems we face today. There is one issue that affects all others because of Premier Doug Ford’s spending on it: hydro. Billions to subsidize hydro, rather than using that money on critical issues like healthcare and housing. Much of the following is a review for rabble readers. However, the problem remains.
