    Grumbling’s evil twin is discontentment. Refusing to recognize the providence of God—that He is sovereignly in control of my life such that the circumstances I face are not random fate—will lead to discontentment. Discontentment inevitably leads to grumbling and vice versa. They go hand in hand, and they are also contagious. I’ve recently tried to reflect on why I’m so prone to grumbling.

    Luke 15 is a chapter for our day. It speaks to the religious, and irreligious; the one who knows he’s lost, and the one who doesn’t. It makes us face up to the reality of our lives. It shows us the terror of what it is to be lost and the glory of what it is to be found. It tells us of the wonder of a God who comes down to rescue, and man’s response to God. It should move us as a church that the people around us are lost, without hope and without God.

    Most visitors to the Edinburgh Fringe in August will find themselves seeing a show at Summerhall. Quite of a few of those will know it is also a year round arts and cultural hub and its many events are not just confined to the Fringe weeks. Less will be aware of the over a hundred people, enterprises and projects that rent studio space at in this labyrinthine building, rooted visually still in its history as The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies.

    Lambeth Fringe is a 4 week Performing Arts Festival in South London – this years festival runs 19th September – 20th October 2024. The festival has taken a leap in grwoth both in terms of programme size and number of venues since its founding years at the Bread and Roses Theatre. The Lambeth Fringe (formerly The Clapham Fringe) is a yearly festival running since 2015 from the team behind The Bread & Roses Theatre.
