    Orange Egypt and Vodafone Egypt have launched their respective 5G mobile networks this week in the country. Orange's launch comes after the telco secured a loan worth more than $80 million from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and Banque Misr to finance the cost of its 5G license. Africa's 5G challengeOrange secured its 5G license in October, at the same time as rival telcos Vodafone Egypt and e& Egypt. Telecom Egypt was awarded its 5G license earlier in 2024.

    An Australian navy ship was blamed for causing an Internet outage across parts of Taranaki, New Zealand. The incident occurred earlier this week during the early hours of Wednesday morning (June 4), impacting ISPs in the area. The navy ship was identified as the HMAS Canberra, Australia’s largest naval vessel. As the ship made its way up the coast to Wellington on Thursday, its navigation radar interfered with WiFi in Taranaki and across to the Marlborough region.

    Officials from both Europe and Asia have once again called for greater protection of subsea cables. It follows on from an open letter sent by some of Europe’s biggest telecom operators and cable industry companies in April, urging European, UK, and NATO decision-makers to bolster security measures against the critical infrastructure. Those companies included Alcatel Submarine Networks, GlobalConnect, NKT, Orange, Proximus, Sparkle, Telefónica, Telenor, and Vodafone.

    Verizon Business has this week commercially launched its Edge Transportation Exchange. The service is a mobile network vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication platform for connected vehicles. Several customers have already signed up for it, noted Verizon, including automotive giant Volkswagen Group of America (VW). The carrier's business unit has launched the V2X platform following a successful 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) joint demonstration.
