    The European Parliament is expected to approve a softening of vehicle CO2 emissions targets that will give automakers three years to meet mandates and avoid punishing fines. Reuters reports that this proposal, which is being fast-tracked for Parliamentary approval, has been put forward by the economic bloc’s trading body, the European Commission, following huge pressure from Europe’s automakers saying the current annual mandated fines could force many out of business.

That’s one of the major findings by a study of 8,000 motorists in the U.S., U.K., Germany and Japan plus 60 senior automaker executives surveyed by SDV specialist Cubic³.

    Jeep’s first electrified versions of its Compass compact CUV enter the market, with mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery-electric variants due. Debuted at Stellantis’ historic Melfi plant in Italy, the new models initially will offer customers a mild hybrid wearing the label “e-Hybrid” and a full-electric variant. Kicking off the options, the e-Hybrid uses a 48V system claiming a power output of 145 hp, while the BEV will come to market with a front-wheel-drive model claiming 213 hp.

    The leaders of Stellantis and Renault are calling on the European Union to help boost production of small cars allowing lighter, less complex vehicles with better profit margins. Stellantis Chairman John Elkann and Renault CEO Luca de Meo issue the call in a joint interview with French newspaper Le Figaro while attacking German premium brands’ overbearing influence on vehicle regulations.
