    STATEWIDE — Gov. Tony Evers has ordered that U.S. and Wisconsin state flags be flown at half-staff in honor of Herb Kohl, philanthropist, former U.S. Senator and former owner of the Milwaukee Bucks. The executive order states that flags are to be flown at half-staff from Thursday (Dec. 28) through the date of Kohl’s interment. Details for Kohl’s memorial services have not been announced. Kohl’s death, at age 88, was announced Wednesday by the Herb Kohl Foundation.

    RACINE — The City of Racine Department of Public Works will begin picking up discarded “real” Christmas trees starting Wednesday, Jan, 3. Here are a few things to keep in mind regarding tree disposal:All decorations (garland, tinsel, lights) must be removed. Trees must be placed near the curb line on your regular solid waste collection day. Do not place trees in bags, boxes or other wrappings. Even if your trash is picked up in an alley, the tree goes on the curb line in front of your residence.

    RACINE, KENOSHA COUNTIES — A stronger overall economy and favorable fuel prices are leading to the busiest Christmas holiday travel period since 2019, according to AAA. The organization is forecasting that 115.2 million travelers will travel 50 miles or more from home between this Saturday (Dec. 23) and Monday, Jan. 1, 2024. That’s a 2.2% increase over last year and the second busiest Christmas-New Year’s Day travel period since 2019 set a record with 119 million travelers.

    RACINE COUNTY — Local property tax bills are arriving in mailboxes this month. Here’s an overview of how and where to pay them in Eastern Racine County. Taxpayers are encouraged to pay by mail or online. Payments should be sent to: City of Racine, 730 Washington Ave., Room 103, Racine, WI 53403. Online payments can be made using the QR code in the brochure that accompanied the tax bill. There is a 25-cent fee to make an online payment.
