United Airlines announced financial results for the first quarter of 2025. Noting it was the its best first quarter in five years, United reported net income of $0.4 billion on revenue of $13.2 billion, up 5.4% compared to the same period in the prior year. The carrier had reported a net loss of $124 million on revenue of $12.5 billion in 2024 and a net loss of $194 million on $11.4 billion in revenue in 2023.

American Airlines announced that, starting in January 2026, it will begin to offer complimentary in-flight Wi-Fi service on its mainline aircraft in partnership with AT&T. Viasat and Intelsat will provide the high-speed satellite connectivity for the airlines’ aircraft, depending on which company’s equipment is installed in the aircraft, and AT&T will sponsor the service. American was the first domestic U.S. carrier to offer in-flight Wi-Fi, launching the Gogo air-to-ground service in 2008.

A volcanic eruption in Iceland that began near the town of Grindavik prompted the evacuation of the tow as well as the closure of a popular nearby tourist destination, the Blue Lagoon. The evacuation order came as the volcano began to spew lava in the direction of the town, RUV, the Icelandic public broadcaster, reported. Aerial video released by local authorities showed lava snaking along the ground as white clouds billowed into the air after the eruption.

Stock markets in the United States plummeted on Thursday in response to President Trump’s escalating trade war. The president on Wednesday imposed a 10% tariff on nearly all foreign imports, higher reciprocal tariffs on some 60 countries, and a 25% tariff on all foreign cars and auto parts. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 1,276 points, or 3%, as of 1 p.m., while the Nikkei 225, Japan’s main stock index, and Europe’s Stoxx 600 each closed 2.7% lower.

An extremely powerful earthquake struck a broad swath of Southeast Asia on Friday, officials in Thailand and Myanmar said. The 7.7-magnitude quake was centered in Myanmar, killing at least 20 people in that country. It caused extensive damage there as well as in Thailand. The United States Geological Survey said the quake, which struck at 12:50 p.m. local time, was of 7.7 magnitude and at a depth of 62 miles (10 km).
