Father-daughter journalist team Paul and Nestan Rimple report from the streets of Tbilisi, where nearly every night since protests broke out in October, Chef Tekuna Gachechiladze has been ladling out soup in paper bowls to protesters fighting for their country’s future. It has been more than a month of nonstop nightly protests here in front of Tbilisi’s Parliament building, the stage of every mass demonstration since 1989, when Soviet forces mowed down 19 people during a rally for independence.

It took the tornado fifteen minutes to hit us from the moment it first appeared. We had just come down the Abano pass from Tusheti on the perilous high-wire referred to as a “road” and were feeling quite secure on flat land. It’s a warm, intimate space, part living room, part museum. A massive collection of wine glasses hang from the ceiling, 19th-century framed portraits of Georgians decorate one wall above a piano, while opposite are glass cases displaying antique ceramic pitchers and elegant, polished drinking horns called kantsi.

Someone had fetched the local American to come translate and show us around. It was the summer of 2001, I had only been in Georgia for a couple weeks and tagged along with an American named Mark who had been invited to a dinner date in Signaghi by its mayor and the governor of Kakheti.
