If you had been told before Monday night's game in Montreal that J.T. Miller was going to have season-highs of two goals and four overall points, you would have been forgiven for believing this would translate into a win.

It was bad enough that the Vancouver Canucks prepared for Saturday night's game in Ottawa without the likes of Brock Boeser, J.T. MIller and Thatcher Demko. All were key to last season's run which produced the third-highest points total in franchise history, and their collective absence would compromise any team.

The Canucks' win over the Blackhawks might now have been particularly impressive, but the performance of Arturs Silovs certainly was. If there was one player on the Vancouver Canucks who needed a good game on Saturday night, it was Artūrs Šilovs. Fortunately for everyone concerned, he did just that in a 4-1 win against the Chicago Blackhawks which was a lot closer that the scoreline suggests. Šilovs had actually begun the campaign as the opening night starter for the Canucks.

If Saturday's game against the Oilers reinforced anything, it's that the Canucks need Thatcher Demko, if they are to make and then progress though the playoffs. As the majority of Vancouver Canucks fans will be well aware, the most important thing to head coach Rick Tocchet is to play sound defensive hockey. As such, Saturday night's home tilt versus the Edmonton Oilers must have been pure agony for the 60-year-old.
