1. IntroductionIn temperate regions, land left fallow for extended time periods post-harvest, of the commercial crop, is subject to the loss of leachable nutrients due to excess rainfall washing them below the rhizosphere [1]. Allingham et al. [2] found in England that, on average, 65 kg/ha of nitrate (NO3−) was leached annually from arable land, which accounted for 25% of the N input.
