The competition is tightening, especially as teams attempt to finish as high as they can in conference standings for better playoff position and the regular-season title is up for grabs in several conferences.

Each week during the season, we look at the big events and big games around Division I men’s college hockey in Tuesday Morning Quarterback. Paula: Well, Dan, there’s a new No. 1 this week and understandably so. After holding the top spot since Dec. 16, Michigan State drops to No. 2 and Boston College ascends to No. 1 for the first time this season. The Eagles held the top poll spot from Jan. 29, 2024 to Mar. 25, 2024, a run of nine weeks at No. 1.

It’s a good week to be a sports fan in Michigan. As the top seed in the NFC, the Detroit Lions host the Washington Commanders in NFL playoff action Saturday night. After a coaching change, the Red Wings won their first seven games of 2025, putting them right there in the hunt for an NHL wild card playoff spot. Even the Detroit Pistons are contributing to the Mitten glowup. As of this writing, the Pistons won seven of their first eight games in January.

By every metric, the Frozen Confines was a huge success for the Big Ten. The event featured six Big Ten teams plus two WCHA women’s teams from B1G schools and was played in Wrigley Field Jan. 3-4, just days after the NHL’s annual Winter Classic. The Big Ten Network did a fantastic job with coveriage, from in-game announcing to between-game conversations. All of the staging and camera work was great. And kudos to Wrigley Field for its promotion of the event.
