One in 10. That’s the number of people in the U.S. who have some degree of atopic dermatitis (AD), an astoundingly common inflammatory skin condition commonly known as eczema. And as anyone who happens to be that one in 10 knows: This condition isn’t easy to ignore. Characterized by scaly, itchy patches that can be pink, red or darker depending on a person’s skin tone, eczema can also cause broken and/or oozing skin that is prone to infection, often caused by relentless scratching.

In some ways, July 4, 2023, felt like a typical Fourth of July holiday for the residents of Lafayette, Louisiana. The day was hot and steamy, as usual, but kids were still playing soccer, older folks were relaxing on screened-in porches and parents were doing last-minute supermarket runs to stock up for family barbecues. The weather, however, wasn’t typical.

Carlos Mercado was settling in for a night of television in 2022 when his heart suddenly began racing, pain gripped his chest and he broke into a cold sweat—symptoms that were all too familiar from a dozen years earlier when a bout of chest pain at the gym landed him in the emergency room (ER). Within days of that initial incident, he was undergoing heart bypass surgery to treat blockages in his arteries. The recovery from heart bypass, says Mercado, now 55, was brutal.
