The first round of Romania’s presidential election on 24 November was won by the far-right nationalist candidate Călin Georgescu, with 23 per cent of the vote.While Georgescu himself has been part of the establishment, working in senior government positions as well as at UN agencies, he portrays himself as an anti-system candidate, giving a voice to people’s frustrations with the parties that have ruled the country since the 1989 revolution.

Romania’s seven million-strong diaspora, one of the biggest in Europe, was once considered a source of votes for reformist parties and candidates. Yet in the country’s recent presidential, parliamentary and euro-parliamentary elections, many Romanians abroad opted for hard-right populists, continuing a trend that started in 2020. While almost a third of Romanians remaining in the country voted for extremist parties on 1 December, more than half of the diaspora opted for the far right.

One day in the 1990s, I was playing with my cousin in a local park in Chișinău, the capital of Romanian-speaking Moldova, when two little girls from the Russian-speaking minority asked us what our names were. We told them: Mihai and Maria Paula. They immediately rebaptised us: “Misha i Masha!” To them, we were all Russians after all.
