Some young adults with disposable incomes for the first time in their lives are trying to make sense of how tariffs are affecting how they should save and spend. In the house group chat, usually a scroll of memes, reminders and dinner plans, one of Jack Kankiewicz's roommates dropped a screenshot of an article about President Trump's tariffs to global trading partners announced on April 2.

Decades ago, John Glover, a lawyer then in his early 30s with a wife and two children, found himself standing in a bank lobby trying to figure out how he could stretch what little remained in his account to cover his expenses. Foreclosure loomed. He wanted to float a check, write it and worry about having the money in the account later. "There was just no money," said Mr. Glover, who had gone out on his own to build a law firm, but was struggling with self-worth issues and becoming an entrepreneur.

The best thing about him was he wasnβt going to hurt me. After that last slice to the heart, I needed to know there wouldnβt be an exit wound. βBoyfriendβ was more than I could muster. Technically, he served as that geriatric euphemism, βcompanionβ: n. a person with whom one spends time, or who shares the experiences of another, especially when unpleasant or unwelcome. Iβve had this conversation a dozen times. It starts with a nail tech rolling my fingertip β peeling, red, perhaps bleeding even β between hers. She tsks, but with concern. She asks why Iβve done it. I bite my nails because I have ADHD, a condition Iβd best describe as often not being able to choose what you do or, more in my case, what you donβt do. The only thing that has helped with the nail biting, Iβve found, is getting a gel manicure. They donβt chip as easily as regular nail polish.
