The North Bay’s two largest local governments, Santa Rosa and Sonoma County, have each poured tens of millions of dollars into services to curb the region’s once-spiking homeless population in recent years, but that pandemic-era spending surge is coming to an end. As state and federal funds that helped prop up those programs dries up and as local lawmakers seek to tighten their purse strings, they’re looking to claw back some of the funding that has gone to various homeless services.

Santa Rosa is joining dozens of other cities in challenging the Trump administration’s efforts to target jurisdictions deemed uncooperative with federal immigration authorities. The federal government has sought to crack down on so-called sanctuary cities and their policies since President Donald Trump took office in January, threatening to withhold federal funding and take other enforcement action if local governments don’t get in line with the White House’s mass deportation efforts.

Golfers at Santa Rosa’s municipal course can expect to pay just a few dollars more per round of golf as the city and course operator work to increase revenues and lift the business out of chronic deficits. Fees for weekday and weekend tee times for adults and seniors at the Bennett Valley Golf Course will increase by $1 to $2, about a 2% to 4% increase. Junior golfers will continue paying the same reduced rates.

Member fees are rising by 10 to 15% and most green fees will go up just a few dollars starting July 1. Small increases are planned next year, too, to help raise revenues at the city-owned course.
