Claire Denis’s love story with America began in Portugal in 1983 when she was 36. She was looking for financing for her first movie, Chocolat, and had spent the last decade working as an assistant director. This diplomat’s daughter who grew up in Cameroon had graduated from the Institut des Hautes Etudes Cinématographiques in Paris, and had already worked with Robert Enrico and Jacques Rivette. Everyone has heard of The Little Prince. The children’s book by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry was published in 1943 and has sold 150 million copies. Other than the Bible and the Koran, it has become the world’s most translated book. Last April saw The Little Prince translated into its 300th language, Hassaniya Arabic, a dialect from Western Sahara. However, few may realize that an author in exile – much like the main character – lies behind this success story.

In Two or Three Things I Know About Her (1967), Jean-Luc Godard films a closeup of a cup and the freshly stirred coffee swirling inside it. Almost ten years later, Robert De Niro’s protagonist in Taxi Driver (1976) self-medicates with aspirin to help with his headaches. Scorsese’s camera zooms in on the glass of water, the dissolving tablet, and the bubbles, as if representing the intrusive thoughts invading the tormented cabbie’s mind.
