1 Introduction Grasslands of the White Carpathian Mts (Bílé Karpaty in Czech, Biele Karpaty in Slovak) have long been recognised as a species-rich ecosystem and a natural phenomenon of international importance (Jongepierová 2008; Klimeš 1997; Sillinger 1929). These grasslands have been part of the Protected Landscape Area Bílé/Biele Karpaty since 1980 and the Bílé Karpaty Biosphere Reserve since 1996 (Jongepierová 2008).
