Recently, CBC Dragon’s Den aired an episode with guest Dragon Simu Liu calling out Quebec-based boba tea company, Bobba, and its founders for engaging in cultural appropriation. This sparked an online firestorm that saw a typical pattern commonplace on social media: both an outpouring of support for Liu’s position and comments, as well as a flood of threats and harassment against Bobba’s founders and other Dragons for their dismissive behaviour during the pitch.

Dìdi (弟弟) is a coming-of-age film written and directed by Sean Wang. The film follows Chris, a 13-year-old Taiwanese American boy, through the summer before high school, experiencing awkward teenage growing pains. Dìdi (弟弟), which means little brother in Mandarin, showcases the relationships between Chris and his family and how three Asian American generations navigate living together under one roof.

Ailsa Chang is NPR’s first-ever Asian American host who also understands what it’s like to grow up in the Asian diaspora, from navigating immigrant parents expectations to discovering what she loves to do. Cold Tea Collective had a chance to speak to Chang about how her cultural experiences growing up in the diaspora shaped her journey to finding a career she’s passionate about. Chang’s parents immigrated from Taiwan to the US with limited resources, family, and friends.

The diverse guest list was reflective of the new programs launched and partnerships developed since last year’s gathering. Cold Tea Collective announced last year our participation in the “Gold Publishers Program” to elevate and amplify the next generation in media.
