With points in every event, Western outpaced the field to pull away and win the 12-team Kokomo Girls Track and Field Sectional on Tuesday at Walter Cross Field, scoring 116 points. RUSSIAVILLE — Western baserunner Allora Bevington had just a split second to make a critical decision in the seventh inning of a tie game between two defending state champions. She got it on the money. With the bases loaded, the scoreboard knotted at 3-3 and pinch runner Bevington on third base, Bevington broke for home on a passed ball and raced in to score the winning run. That pushed Class 3A No. 3 Western past Class 2A No. 10 Rossville 4-3.

The core of seniors that fueled Maconaquah’s boys basketball team this season have been winning together for a long time. Josiah Ball, Fuddy Kile, Devon Murry, A.J. Kelly and Landon Adams were the starting five and all except Adams — who joined as a freshman — have been playing together since elementary school. “We won our first championship together in fourth grade,” Ball said. “All through middle school we went undefeated. We won all those conferences.

Kokomo’s boys track and field team has plenty to work with this season after taking the title at the Kokomo Sectional last spring. The Kats have lots of experienced athletes, including a pair of state qualifiers in junior Jeremiah Young and senior Jedaiah Beard as they get rolling in the new season. “We obviously have last year’s sectional title as motivation, but our athletes are continually reminded that last year’s title doesn’t bring us success this year,” Kokomo coach Zenova Williams said.
