If there was anyone that deserved the spotlight to lead a murder mystery movie, it’d have to be Michelle Yeoh. The Crazy Rich Asians and Everything Everywhere All at Once star has, no doubt, made an impact with such powerful performances. However, Yeoh’s one role that’s stuck with fans the most has to be Star Trek: Discovery‘s Philippa Georgiou. Throughout the show, Star Trek fans developed a soft spot for the ruthless, yet tactical, leader of the Terran Empire despite her comeuppances.

There’s no doubt that action films are making a crazy comeback this year thanks to the next instalment of the Mission Impossible franchise. Yet, 2024 seemed to deliver with some exciting movies like Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Rebel Ridge and even Fall Guy. Of course, in the realm of TV, there were several standouts, including the impeccable and thrilling series, Mr. & Mrs. Smith. For a show that adapted a movie, it left viewers captivated by having two spies as a couple.

For a sequel that’s been in development for a while now, fans were waiting for Den of Thieves 2: Pantera to come. In fact, it’s been in the works by director Christian Gudegast for nearly seven years, which is a feat of its own. Though he’s been a screenwriter, with London Has Fallen and A Man Apart, Gudegast has always sought to go bigger. His collaboration with Gerard Butler has shown that, especially with the first Den of Thieves.

It really seems like Sony’s Spider-Man universe has been snowballing towards disaster that began with Madame Web. Everything that was planned, from the now lost El Muerto movie to Donald Glover’s Hypno-Hustler, it never seemed liked it had any direction. Though fans were reeled by Venom, having finished his arc in Venom: The Last Dance, any interest that’s left remains in the Spider-Verse. Where does that leave Kraven the Hunter, the last live-action film in Sony’s little Spidey realm?

If there was ever a big year for musicals, then this year would be that year. From stellar Broadway adaptations like Wicked to the unorthodox Emilia Pérez, audiences have become accustomed to watching more musicals. Yet, in a time where it seems like the world is going under, some might look for a musical that’s perfectly timely. Luckily, The Act of Killing‘s Joshua Oppenheimer has proudly delivered a thematically insightful movie that’s certainly relevant: The End.

However, when it comes to revitalizing any media, it’s often hard to add something new. Most audiences want a modern take to remain faithful to the source as much as possible. So, when a Nosferatu remake was announced, it was clear, to some, that it’d be terrible.

The Broadway musical is an entire spectacle of its own. Since its adapted debut over 20 years ago, Wicked transformed the entire theater world with all of its Oz-ian magic. Spawning from a line of many other adaptations of The Wizard of Oz, this version truly gripped audiences with its intriguing concept. It presents a backstory about the two powerful Witches that guide Dorothy and her gang down the yellow brick road.

This year, there were so many animated movies that twisted expectations in amazing ways. From Transformers One to Inside Out 2 to The Wild Robot, such films managed to find depth on a universal level. Surprisingly, all of these films are family-oriented, yet they all tackled mature ideas. Whether it be through dialogue or through narrative, these movies found a grounding that made them truly compelling.
