Whenever small boats potentially being used for human smuggling show up on the Southern California coast, Customs and Border Protection or Coast Guard crews work to stop them in their path and apprehend people on board. "What we normally see is the Coast Guard will turn people over to Border Patrol for immigration processing,” said Pedro Ríos with the American Friends Service Committee.

Multiple executive orders signed this week establish the federal government as the top authority on immigration policy. "The Sheriff is the sole authority for setting policy for my organization and so it should stand the same with the federal government," said San Diego County Sheriff Kelly Martinez.

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Some San Diego restaurant owners are grappling with higher costs on rent, food, and delivery. “There are so many things restaurants have to do right to succeed," said Denny Knox at the Ocean Beach Main Street Association. "And everything is slim margins.”Knox said this past year was especially difficult on local businesses, and most of their expenses have trickled down to customers. “They had really big increases. It was hard to keep up with," Knox said.

The Trump administration is looking to strengthen local law enforcement agencies in a recent executive order, promising to maximize the use of federal resources to improve officer training, increase pay and benefits, and enhance prison security. “It’s absolutely great to hear support from the federal government,” said Lieutenant Jared Wilson, the President of the San Diego Police Officers Association. SDPOA is the union representing all sworn police officers and recruits within SDPD.
