    All four Westman teams made it to the semifinals at Softball Manitoba’s AA under-13 and U15 showcase at Ashley Neufeld Softball Complex on Sunday, and two of them took home gold. The Brandon-based Westman Heat topped the Westman Fury in the U13 final, while the Westman Storm rallied to beat the Heat in the U15 gold-medal game. Meanwhile, the Storm beat Central Energy for the U13 bronze, while Central took an extra inning to beat Fury 9-8 in the U15 third-place game.

    When it comes to AA softball in Manitoba, the annual provincial showcase is the first real sense coaches get of what they have. Under-13 Westman Heat head coach Heidi Figol said it’s a fun weekend, in part due to that uncertainty. “Coming into this tournament, we have no idea what to expect,” Figol said. “A lot of these girls on our team are minors moving up, so we know what we know from last year.     As the Wheat City Classic entered its final innings on Sunday afternoon, Mother Nature knocked it out of the park. The annual tournament, which was staged at Ashley Neufeld Softball Complex and the north and south diamonds at the North End field, was finally brought to a halt for good after just one of the final slate of games began at 1 p.m.Tournament chair Joel Whiteside said it was a difficult weekend but everyone persevered.
