Our mate Laurie runs a very interesting fishing contest from Coromandel each year. It’s a two-day, softbaiting-only, kayak-fishing-only, three-species contest. Overall prizewinning depends on the longest combined length of your best one of each of snapper, kahawai, and trevally. If you miss out on even one of the species you’re unlikely to be in the first 10. And last year, a record 15% of the entrants managed to measure one of each of the species. Usually, it’s not that many.

Knife or sharp instrument offencesPolice recorded crime provides a better measure than the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) of higher-harm but less common types of violence, such as those involving a knife or sharp instrument (knife-enabled crime). Knife-enabled crime recorded by the police in the year ending September 2023 increased by 5% (48,716 offences) compared with the year ending September 2022 (46,367 offences).

1. Main points In the year ending March 2023, an estimated 9.5% of people aged 16 to 59 years (approximately 3.1 million people) reported using a drug in the last 12 months; 7.6% reported using cannabis (around 2.5 million people) and 3.3% reported using a Class A drug (around 1.1 million people).

So much of what happens in an English lesson is written in exercise books, marked by the teacher and then, once feedback has been given, just lives on a shelf or in a cupboard. Students’ words - the beautifully crafted sentences - stay locked in their books, never to be celebrated beyond the classroom. This is something we decided to change: by creating beautiful posters of our students’ compositions and using these to liven up our school corridors. I know that this might raise a few eyebrows.
