SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The wideouts sprinted 10 yards, turned, then came back to the football, bursting between two tackling dummies. Receivers coach Mike Brown fired the footballs, one after the other, until the entire position group took a rep. Almost every football was caught, which still isn't enough for a group seemingly stuck in rebuilding mode the past few seasons.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Marcus Freeman implored, encouraged and pleaded on Saturday afternoon as Notre Dame staged arguably its most important practice of the spring, a nearly 60-play scrimmage inside the Irish Athletics Center. As much as no single day can make or break the offseason, the roughly two-hour open practice offered some indications of where Notre Dame is headed and where it needs to go.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Jalen Stroman watched from the stands, seated just behind the Notre Dame bench. He wasn't quite an idle bystander inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium, but the Virginia Tech transfer wasn't an active participant, either. Flanked by the rest of Notre Dame's mid-year transfer class, Stroman was already an Irish football player, considering the semester had begun in South Bend. He just wasn't able to be one in full as the Irish fell to Ohio State in the national title game.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - And just like that, Notre Dame is halfway through spring practice. If you think it's been difficult to get a read on what the Irish have accomplished, you're probably not alone. Thanks to the truncated schedule and limited player availability, the spring schedule has felt more like an introduction for Notre Dame's next roster than a massive step forward. But after a 16-game season, that's probably just fine for Marcus Freeman. The real work comes in August, anyway.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - It's hard to know where to start with Jack Kiser. It's not much easier to know where to finish with the former Notre Dame linebacker who played in a program-record 70 games, a mark almost mathematically impossible to break.

In three games against Top 25 opponents last season, Iamaleava went 48-of-91 for 465 yards and 1 TD. The Vols went 1-2 in those games. What a sport.

Sources: Tennessee QB Nico Iamaleava did not attend Tennessee spring practice today. He’s been in conversations with Tennessee about a new contract. The no-show of practice came as a surprise. https://t.co/VXsXTPDZpu
