Surfrider celebrates President Biden’s historic action to permanently withdraw the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, Eastern Gulf of Mexico, and parts of the Northern Bering Sea from future offshore drilling. On January 6, President Biden announced the withdrawal of the entire U.S. East Coast, the eastern Gulf of Mexico, the Pacific off the coasts of Washington, Oregon, and California, and additional portions of the Northern Bering Sea in Alaska from future oil and gas leasing.

On October 23, 1972, the United States launched a new era of ocean conservation with the enactment of the National Marine Sanctuaries Act. Surfrider’s Hawai’i chapters helped pass legislation to prevent seabed mining in state waters, reflecting growing opposition to this damaging industry. On July 9, Governor Josh Green signed the Hawai’i Seabed Mining Prevention Act (SB 2575) into law, following the bill’s successful passage in the Hawaii Senate and Assembly.
