It is always confirming – and impressive to discover a new important play presented by swathe of local talent, from actors, directors and backstage crew through to the playwright Emily Steel herself. This is clearly a well written, well constructed and well researched piece of theatre, of which the State Theatre Company of SA, and the whole South Australian community can be proud.

From the moment that you take your seat in the Dunstan Playhouse to see this production, you will be aware, well before the start of the play, as the audience comes in, that this is going to be an unusual piece of theatre. On a wide open, bare stage, where the backstage and wings areas are fully visible and apparently lit by a single globe, the cast is seen moving about, disporting various 19th century under garments, all doing their individual verbal and physical warmups.

Adelaide is being rocked with a spectacular, respectful and celebratory tribute to an extraordinary woman. The real Tina Turner died a year ago, but her presence was palpable in this fabulous show. It is vibrant, loud, slick, energetic, loud, vigourous, loud and magnificent. Whatever your particular taste in music, this is an amazing piece of theatre not to be missed. Ruva Ngwenya in the title role recreates the persona, the musician, the voice and the vitality of this dynamic rebel and trailblazer.

The Children is an intelligent, complex, moving and challenging, yet fun play. So it does not offer a simple night of light entertainment, but it is a brilliant piece of work by actors, writer, director, and crew in perfect harmony. It’s not about children, yet it very much is – it concerns the future of children, and the child-like immobilisation of people affected by an overwhelming trauma.

This magnificent production is a mindblower. As a work of its time, although written and first performed in 1989, it is set in a context of the horrors of the American Vietnam war in the 1970s. While the particular memories of this horrible time have faded for many, and were beyond the lifetime of more of the current audience, all generations in attendance were swept away by the intensity, drama, passionate emotionality and sheer precision of this flawless performance.
