The United States is moving forward with imposing a 25 per cent tariff on vehicles imported into the country, set to take effect April 2, and will eventually look to do the same for some automotive parts. David Adams, president and CEO of the Global Automakers of Canada, said the tariffs are taxes that will hurt consumers by increasing costs, driving up inflation and impacting workers on both sides of the border.

The European Commission is imposing countermeasures on United States’ imports in response to new tariffs on European steel and aluminum, calling the U.S.’s actions unjustified and disruptive to transatlantic trade. Starting April 1, the EU will let previous countermeasures from 2018 and 2020 resume, affecting U.S. goods equal to the economic impact of €8 billion (CAD$12.5 billion) in lost European exports.

In a response to Ontario implementing a 25 per cent tariff on electricity crossing the southern border, the United States has doubled its tariff on Canadian steel and aluminum to 50 per cent. “Based on Ontario, Canada, placing a 25% Tariff on “Electricity” coming into the United States, I have instructed my Secretary of Commerce to add an ADDITIONAL 25% Tariff, to 50%, on all STEEL and ALUMINUM COMING INTO THE UNITED STATES FROM CANADA, ONE OF THE HIGHEST TARIFFING NATIONS ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD.

The White House announced today that there will be a one-month exemption for the big three auto manufacturers in North America on auto tariffs when entering the U.S. from Canada under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement. The big three automakers in North America are General Motors, Ford and Stallantis.
