ST. PAUL — In the race between Gophers and Badgers for voter turnout, the Badgers won. Voters in Wisconsin narrowly outperformed Minnesota voters in the 2024 election. The University of Florida’s Election Lab reported that 76.35% of the voting-eligible population cast ballots in Minnesota. In Wisconsin, 76.64% of the voting-eligible population cast ballots. Secretary of State Steve Simon regularly touts Minnesota’s long-running first-place voter turnout position.

Around 500 Minnesota state employees protested Saturday in St. Paul, calling on DFL Gov. Tim Walz to reverse course on a policy to require more in-office work. The governor says having more employees spend at least half their time at their workplaces will improve communication and collaboration. State employee unions oppose the policy, saying it will require many people to reorder their lives after five years of pandemic-imposed remote work habits.

ST. PAUL — The head of Minnesota’s largest state agency is stepping down. Department of Human Services commissioner Jodi Harpstead announced Monday afternoon she’s leaving her role on Feb. 3. Harpstead was appointed to lead the agency in August 2019 by DFL Gov. Tim Walz. In a statement, Walz praised Harpstead’s work to reorganize DHS. “I am proud of her work running the most complex and wide-ranging agency in state government,” Walz’s statement said.
