    There have been over 500 rule breaches related to the improper use of slurry recorded on NI farms over a five-year period. The latest available figures show that 526 cross compliance breaches relating to slurry usage were found from 2019 to 2023. The figures were published last week by Agriculture Minister Andrew Muir in response to a written question from SDLP MLA Cara Hunter.

    A group which was charged by Agriculture Minister Andrew Muir to produce a “delivery plan” for new bovine TB policy in NI has missed its original deadline. The TB partnership steering group was established in January 2025 with the remit of producing a report for Minister Muir’s consideration by the end of March. A spokesperson for DAERA said the group has met 11 times since it was set up, with the most recent meeting taking place on Tuesday.

    Wildlife risk with designated sites, says UFUThere is an increased risk of wildfire on land which is designated as an environmental site, the deputy president of the Ulster Farmers’ Union (UFU) has said. In a statement, John McLenaghan said there are “tight controls” on grazing and land management on designated sites, plus controlled burning is not permitted.

    The total volume of livestock feed delivered to NI farms was down by 93,000 tonnes last year, according to new data published by DAERA. Overall, NI farmers bought 2.56m tonnes of concentrates during 2024, which is 3.5% less than the year previous and the lowest annual total since 2020. In general, total feed deliveries in NI have been on gradual upward trend over the past 15 years and a peak was reached in 2023 when 2.65m tonnes were bought by NI farmers.

    Farming unions across the UK have vowed to keep campaigning against the new £1m limit on Agricultural Property Relief (APR) and Business Property Relief (BPR). All farmers should play their part and keep supporting efforts to force a change to the new inheritance tax rules which are due to take effect in April 2026. However, it is important to start thinking about what impact it might have on succession planning on your farm if the policy is introduced without any changes.
