Scared, worried, anxious, numb, fearful, angry, disappointed, devastated, terrified. Those were the words I kept hearing – and feeling. In the weeks after Election Day, I was in constant contact with my fellow LGBTQ+ Americans. In listening sessions at work, gatherings in our neighborhood, one-on-one coffee dates and text threads with family and friends, we all shared our fears for what comes next. Donald Trump’s victory has terrified LGBTQ+ families like mine.

The eighteenth century was a century of great letter writers, and Voltaire was the greatest of them all. He was also one of the most prolific. As Theodore Besterman reminds us in his Introduction to his selection from Voltaire’s vast correspondence, Voltaire wrote at least twenty thousand letters in his long life, to more than 1200 correspondents.

Those of us watching the first weekend of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament on CBS saw numerous promos for the network’s coverage of The Masters golf tournament in a few weeks. “A tradition unlike any other” is used every year in promoting the invitation-only tournament held in April at the Augusta National Golf Course in Georgia. The phrase, coined by lead play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz back in 1986, certainly applies to another annual event held in our neck of the woods.

Across the country, schools, colleges and universities are wrestling with questions involving the growing LGBTQ+ population. In many states, new laws have created a wide array of rules to prevent schools from discussing certain issues related to gender identity or sexuality. Meanwhile, in others, educating students about issues such as LGBTQ+ history has been built into curricula. Indeed, educational institutions can serve as a crucial lifeline for LGBTQ+ Americans.

For years, activists have pointed out that health care for LGBTQ+ Americans is “under attack,” and bias is thriving. People frequently face gaps in health services, treatment, and outcomes. There's another aspect of this problem that needs to be addressed.

I had the opportunity to check an item off my bucket list on Saturday when we had the honor of attending the 124th Army-Navy game at Gillette Stadium. The opportunity to attend the meeting of the nation’s two oldest service academies came as a result of an impulsive act I made back in March.

I’ve been accused of many things in my lifetime, but “right-wing” was a first. On a scale of one to 10, with one being a bleeding-heart liberal and 10 a cold-hearted conservative, I would say I’m probably a 5, a moderate who is more compassionate than those on the right. Although more conservative than other local columnists you read in this newspaper, I certainly chuckled when a reader used the term “right-wing” to describe me last week. You be the judge.

It was obvious from emails I received in response to last week’s column a few of you didn’t agree with my lack of support for striking members of the United Auto Workers. Two of the emails stated unions were responsible for the creation of the middle class. I don’t disagree. One reader who supports unions claimed the average salary of $60,000 (not including overtime) that UAW members earn is not excessive in this economy. He added $100,000 is also not excessive.
