Coming out as gay in the 1990s instantly put you in a high-risk category for HIV. Many friends lived in fear of contracting it and it was seen as a death sentence. I had two friends who died from AIDS and the waste of their young lives being lost still angers me over 20 years later. Thankfully, things have improved.

In England, we face a tidal wave of avoidable blindness. That might sound drastic, but according to the RNIB an estimated 250 people a day are beginning to lose their sight. As our population ages it’s expected that one in five of us will live with sight loss during our lifetime. Our eyesight is something all of us would be fearful to lose. For some, sight loss comes suddenly and for others, it’s part of a long-term health condition. Either way it inevitably has a profound impact on daily life.

Medical practitioners in Australia could be doing more to help patients with asthma, particularly in helping reduce preventable asthma, write Professor Peter Gibson, Professor Phil Bardin, Professor Christine Jenkins and Associate Professor John Blakey. Too many Australians with asthma do not have an adequate understanding of how to manage their condition.
