A few weeks ago, the Sri Lankan community in Australia lost one its most distinguished sons, Dr P R Wkiramanayake, known as Ranji to his friends, an accomplished and highly regarded endocrinologist. He was 92 years of age and hailed from a distinguished family with its origins in Galle. The ancestry and genealogy of the family is well recorded in the book “Galle as quiet as asleep “(1993) by Norah Roberts. The elder son of E.G. Wikramanayake, Queens Counsel, Ranji was born into the lap of luxury.

Heather Stefanson is no longer leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba. The former prime minister announced over the weekend that she would resign on Monday. She said the role was an honor of a lifetime. “Looking forward, I am excited to watch our party continue to grow as our members elect a new leader and stand up to this NDP government,” Stefanson said in a statement. Stefanson was first elected as an MLA in 2000 and was the first woman to become premier in Manitoba.

As Albertans woke up to another day of extremely cold temperatures, the province’s power grid operator had put another grid alert in effect to warn of erratic power supplies. At 9:21 a.m., the warning was lifted, which the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) attributed to renewable energy capacity coming online.

Tiny shacks to house homeless people could soon be coming to Chatham as community officials in Chatham-Kent look for new ways to address the growing housing and homelessness crisis. A plan for 50 transitional huts to replace Victoria Park Place by May 2025 will be submitted to council, while final capital costs and recommended locations still need to be identified for final approval. “Obviously it’s a growing problem,” said the South Kent district attorney. Anthony Ceccacci.

Monday was another busy day in Calgary and some flights from Calgary International Airport were either delayed or canceled altogether. As of 2:30 p.m., 37 flights had been canceled, including 32 WestJet flights. Mara Acord lives in California but came to Banff to ski and visit her parents in Edmonton. Your WestJet flight to San Diego was canceled. “Super frustrating. It affects work and the things I have to take care of out there,” she said.
