At the National Catholic Reporter, we along with our fellow Catholics are praying for Pope Francis as he battles bilateral pneumonia. As we pray, we also contemplate the future of the church. Francis' recent illness at the age of 88 had us thinking about past papal transitions. This year as we celebrate our 60th anniversary, we are enjoying stepping into the archives and dusting off our bound print editions to read our previous coverage.
