Wilmette could add more than 500 homes with an “affordable” designation if the Village’s Affordable Housing Plan updates are passed. The proposed changes were presented to the Wilmette Village Board at its regular meeting on Tuesday, May 28. No vote was taken, but a public hearing and vote are expected at the June 10 regular meeting.

For the second time in five months, a Village of Winnetka regulatory board has rejected Winnetka Park District’s plans for Centennial Park and Beach improvements. In a unanimous 6-0 vote at its Wednesday, May 28 meeting, the Winnetka Plan Commission recommended denial of the park district’s plans for Centennial, with commissioners saying the plans do not meet the standards for a special use permit.

A proposed fitness center’s zoning request has passed the Wilmette Village Board, but two trustees couldn’t get behind the lack of sales taxes the business will produce. The zoning relief sought by Club Studio, which is planning on moving in to Edens Plaza, passed via a 5-2 vote, with Trustees Steve Leonard and Mark Steen in opposition. As previously reported by The Record, Club Studio has leased the former Bed Bath & Beyond space at Edens Plaza.

New Trier High School plans to implement more hands-on, real-world learning experiences over the next few years following a recommendation from a schoolwide committee. The recommendation was made at a School Board meeting Monday, May 19, during a presentation by the district’s future programming coordinators.

Councilwoman Kim Stone was celebrated by her Highland Park City Council colleagues on Monday, when she attended her final meeting and concluded 12 years of service to the group. Stone, who sought reelection this spring for an unexpired two-year term on the council, finished second in a three-candidate field in the April 1 election. Jon Center won the seat and joined the board May 12, as did four-year-term winners (all current councilmembers) Barisa Bruckman, Andrés Tapia and Annette Lidawer.
