TRAVERSE CITY — Forensic nurses at Munson Medical Center are playing a key role in combating criminal sexual assault in northern Michigan. Each year, they conduct 40 to 50 “SANE” exams to collect vital evidence using a process that protects confidentiality and aids law enforcement. SANE stands for “sexual assault nurse exam,” sometimes called a rape kit exam. Specially trained nurses follow a specific set of protocols to perform a medical evaluation in a private room at the emergency department.

CADILLAC — The board of Northern Lakes Community Mental Health Authority met Thursday in the wake of a forensic accounting investigation that revealed widespread financial mismanagement under a previous leadership team. TRAVERSE CITY — A year-long investigation into financial operations at Northern Lakes Community Mental Health Authority revealed failings in the agency’s accounting practices, including nearly $2 million in misallocated expenses. The Record-Eagle obtained a copy of the 108-page report Tuesday from the Northern Michigan Regional Entity that manages Medicaid funding for behavioral health services in 21 area counties, including Northern Lakes’ territory.

TRAVERSE CITY — Michigan isn’t yet a national leader in recycling but it’s making steady progress, thanks in part to grants from the Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE). Last year, EGLE awarded $5 million in grant funding to expand recycling operations in eight communities, from Marquette County in the north to Van Buren County in the south. Most of the nine grants are designed to increase processing capacity and efficiency at existing recycling facilities.
