Das Europäische Parlament hat am Dienstag (18. April) weitreichende Reformen beschlossen, um die europäische Klimapolitik ehrgeiziger zu gestalten. Der EU-ETS wird reformiert, CO2 auszustoßen wird damit immer teurer. Der europäische CO2-Markt zwingt Kraftwerke und Fabriken dazu, CO2-Zertifikate zu kaufen, wenn sie die Umwelt verschmutzen. Dadurch konnten die Emissionen dieser Sektoren seit 2005 um 43 Prozent gesenkt werden.

Mit großer Mehrheit hat das Europaparlament heute die Reform des europäischen Emissionshandels verabschiedet. Der Emissionshandel ist das „Herzstück“ der europäischen Klimapolitik.

Der Preisaufschlag auf fossile Brennstoffe wie Heizgas und -öl, Benzin und Diesel im Rahmen eines neuen, zweiten EU-Emissionshandels ab 2027 könnte deutlich über den von den EU-Institutionen angestrebten 45 Euro liegen, sagen Experten. Den EU-Abgeordneten werfen sie vor, falsche Erwartungen zu wecken. Am kommenden Dienstag (18. April) soll das Europäische Parlament über die Reform des europäischen Emissionshandels abstimmen, auf die sich die EU-Institutionen im Dezember 2022 geeinigt hatten.
