Australia’s Reserve Bank looks increasingly out of step with economic realities. Its agreement with the government, struck by Treasurer Jim Chalmers and Governor Michele Bullock less than a year ago, requires it to aim for “consumer price inflation between 2 and 3 per cent”. A scorecard at the top of the RBA website displays the inflation number in particularly bold print. Mid Wednesday that display switched from 3.8 per cent to 2.8 per cent. Inflation had fallen to within its target zone.

Thirteen years ago at the tax summit called to discuss the Henry Tax Review, David Koch stopped discussion of negative gearing dead in its tracks. Better known by many as "Kochie", he was the long-running host of Channel Seven's Sunrise, TV's favourite "daggy dad", a finance journalist and a community representative at the summit. Property manager Eddie Kutner had just finished putting the case for negative gearing.
