Four in five companies in the construction sector have no plans to employ more workers this year on cost and cash flow concerns, even as the government banks on the sector to deliver on its jobs promise, under the affordable housing scheme. A new Central Bank of Kenya survey shows that 80 per cent of companies in the sector indicate they “probably won’t” or “definitely won’t” increase the number of employees in 2025 relative to 2024.

An administrator appointed by Equity Bank on Thursday took control of East African Cables but its parent firm TransCentury managed to block seizure by the bank, which was enforcing its claim of Sh4.74 billion that the two firms have defaulted on. Equity failed in its bid to take over control of a property associated with investment firm TransCentury in Nairobi’s Lavington neighbourhood, after the lender’s appointed receivers were locked out of the premises by the entrance guard.

Contracts signed by agencies in national and county governments will from July 1, 2025 no longer be a secret following a new directive to integrate the digital procurement system with the Public Procurement Information Portal (PPIP). The move is set to shine the spotlight on public institutions that have previously refused to disclose crucial public contracts on the PPIP, with deals valued about Sh2 trillion in the coming fiscal year expected to go live on the portal.

Just 12.4 percent of over Sh1.4 billion fines imposed by the Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK) since 2021 have been paid, as companies punished for misconduct take on the competition watchdog in courts. The authority says firms fined for misconduct such as abuse of buyer power, forming cartels and other anti-competitive behaviours paid Sh177.5 million in fines and penalties between 2021 and 2025, as major players contested the measures.

Salaries allocated to top-level government officials have fallen by Sh600 million in the current fiscal year after the controller of budget (CoB) raised concerns about over-budgeting by the National Treasury. The budget for salaries of state officers, who are paid through the consolidated fund services (CFS), dropped from Sh4.74 billion in the year ending June 2024 to Sh4.14 billion in the current fiscal year.
