The Trump administration pulled back a total of $77 million worth of pandemic relief funding for Illinois schools, according to the Illinois State Board of Education. Schools had until last fall to allocate their remaining COVID relief funding. At dozens of districts, the last bit of that money had been approved for projects and spent but they were still waiting for federal reimbursement. Now, the Trump administration says they won’t get it.

In October 2024, former Rockford Day Nursery executive director Jim Peterson went on local TV to promote a new fundraiser. “We're looking to expand our operations," he said to WIFR. "Currently, we serve about 75 kids, but we’re renovating some rooms, and we're going to expand up to close to 150 kids, so almost double our size.”But, within a month, the Rockford Day Nursery had abruptly closed down. Those 75 families lost their childcare overnight.
