Twenty years ago, beating back HIV seemed an almost impossible dream. The disease was ravaging communities across the world, taking a huge toll on lives and societies. Since then, we have come an extraordinarily long way and seen great leaps in prevention, treatment and awareness. The past decade has seen a 38% reduction in HIV incidence and fewer people acquired HIV globally in 2023 than at any point since the late 1980s. This is certainly cause for celebration.

I am delighted to see that the i newspaper is running its apprenticeship scheme again. It really is a fantastic opportunity for school and college leavers who want to be journalists. I helped with the scheme in 2021 which was a great success. One of the apprentices from that scheme, Kia Elise-Green, is now a senior feature writer. She says: 'This scheme gave me a way into a career I dreamed of without the financial barrier of university.

Trainee subs Karla Hallett, Myriam Page, Emily Bell, Oliver Jervis (with the champagne),Zoe Glascow, Amelia Perry, Ed Tracy and Tom BurtonI said farewell to eight Daily Mail trainees sub-editors today after four busy and intense weeks. They spent most of this week developing their InDesign and Photoshop skills and laying out Mail pages with designer Mike Brough. Last night we had drinks with senior staff at the Greyhound. We finished the week as usual with the newsquiz, 25 questions about the week.

The Daily Mail trainee subs had another busy week in Kensington. They spent Monday doing long-form editing with Fiona Webster, assistant night editor Lottie Young set them a subbing exercise and they enjoyed cookies and great advice from executive chief-sub Rich Hall. They wrote personality profiles and headlines, copytasted for the next day’s paper, covered a breaking story in real time and came up with ideas for new publications and features.
