My mother, Janie Thomas, a social worker and lecturer, who has died aged 95, became a leading light in the British Association of Social Workers (BASW), of which she was president from 1984 to 1986. She began her career in 1955 at St George’s hospital, central London, before working with children and families at the London county council (LCC) and then the borough of Tower Hamlets.

For the fourth time in program history, the Duke women’s soccer team are ACC Regular Season Champions. On Sunday, October 27, the No. 1 ranked Blue Devils went on the road and knocked off No. 2 ranked Wake Forest, 2-0, in front of a record crowd of 3,761 fans. Duke freshman forward Sophia Recupero of Hopkinton has made her presence felt throughout the season; she’s featured in every game and seen significant minutes against Boston College, Louisville and Missouri.
